Where-to: find good vintage clothes

I really love the vintage look but I’ve been searching my local charity shops with no joy for ages. Got any tips KISS?
Aine, Tipperary

.

The key to successful vintage shopping is keeping an eye out all the time. While gems do pop up now and then, the odds of spotting a gorge one-of-a-kind are significantly less if you chance a visit once a month or so.

.

Timing is everything, the more you check in, the more you’re bound to find. So a 5 min scan once a week beats a 20 minute rummage once a month.

.

Also check with the staff to see when new stock is likely to be put out, so you can be there to nab the best before anyone else gets a look in.

.

Going second-hand shopping with a specific item in mind is also a no-no. Hunting down the perfect trench coat, for example, will only lead to frustration. Keep an open agenda and you’re far more likely to leave swinging a shopping bag of bargains.

.

And If you still have no joy, there’s tons of online stores that offer vintage and retro-inspired pieces for a little more ching.

.

Mod Cloth is a virtual treasure trove of retro-inspired and genuine clothing, accessories and even homewares. They’ve a really wide selection so you’re guaranteed to find something you love.

.

Or closer to home Golly Gosh Boutique, based in Dublin, offer genuine pieces from the 1920s through to the 1980s through their Facebook store. There you can pick up a gorge floral print scarf for €4 or a unique dress for €20-25.

.

Happy hunting!
