Tom Holland is best known for his role in Marvel movies as Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man. But this breakout role was far from his first, and there are plenty of interesting facts about the 23-year-old that you may not have known, so let’s get to know him…

He found out he was playing Spider-Man via Instagram.

You’d imagine that landing a dream role would result in a life-changing phone call, but Tom found out in a much less official way.  “I was in my bed scrolling through Instagram,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It had been about a month since my audition. And Marvel just posted a photo saying go to our website and find out who the next Spider-Man is. I went on the Marvel website on my computer and there it was: The new Spider-Man is Tom Holland. I went ballistic, like absolutely nuts.” We can’t really blame him!

Before he was Spider-Man, he was a ballet dancer

Before the role we all fell in love with Tom in, he played Billy Elliot on the West End. The story, which was also a movie of the same name, follows a young boy who falls in love with ballet, much to the disapproval of his father. He played the role from 2008 to 2010.

Tom is dyslexic

The actor was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of just seven. He has mentioned it in some interviews but rarely speaks publicly about the learning difficulty. However, many fans have commended him for learning scripts and working as a successful despite his difficulties.

He has a very cute dog

Tess is a blue Staffordshire Bull Terrier whom he posts about all the time. When he’s away for work, he regularly FaceTimes his doggo and even brought her on the red carpet during a premiere.

His dad is a celeb too

Dominic Anthony Holland is a well-known comedian, author and broadcaster. So Tom knew a thing or two about fame before his Spider-Man role, but on a far lesser scale of course!  His mam, Nicola Frost, is a photographer.

His granny was Irish

Tom’s granny on his dad’s side was from Ireland, making him a quarter Irish. We’ll take it!

He can perform back-flips.

And side, and front-flips too! Perhaps it was the hip-hop classes as a young boy, the ballet training for Billy Elliot, or the action films he’s currently starring in, he’s developed an impressive skill. So if ever you bump into the star, be sure to ask him to show it off!

He’s got a huge fear of spiders

Yep, Spider-Man is afraid of Spiders! Ironic, but not surprising, because it’s super common.

Tom’s a Gemini

Born on June 1st 1996, Tom falls on the first day of the Gemini cycle. This would make the star caring and dependable, intuitive and creative… makes sense! They can also be scattered and impatient!

Tom attended the well-known BRIT School.

The prestigious BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology was also home to other massive stars like Adele, Amy Winehouse and Jessie J, so he’s in good company.
