We all know Anne Hathaway.
One of the biggest actresses in Hollywood from The Princess Diaries to The Devil Wears Prada and Ocean’s 8.
So you could probably say we all know her pretty well at this stage. Except, it turns out, we’ve been calling her a name she hates this whole time.
She recently appeared on chat show The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Jimmy pointed out that they were good friends and that he noticed her good friends calling her ‘Annie’ instead.
When asked what he should call her she said: “Call me Annie, please everybody call me Annie.”
She went on: “Can we talk about my name for a second?”
She explained that she got stuck with the name because of registering for her SAG card. Which is the Screen Actors Guild, a registry for people in media.
“When I was 14 years old, I did a commercial, and I had to get my SAG card and they asked me, ‘What do you want your name to be?'” she said. “And I was like, ‘Well, it should be my name. My name’s Anne Hathaway.’ So that seemed like the right choice,” she revealed.
“But it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, people will call me Anne.”
The actress went on to say that no one in her life really calls her by that name.
“The only person who calls me Anne is my mother and she only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad,” she said. “So every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.”
She added: “People are like, “Anne!” And I’m like “What? What did I do?” People are so lovely they don’t want to be presumptuous and so I think they come up with workarounds on set because the truth is nobody’s comfortable with calling me Anne ever. It doesn’t fit. I’m an Annie.”
She added that there are other names she likes too.
“People call me Miss H, people call me Hath, so feel free, call me anything but Anne.”
So while her professional name is probably going to stay the same, if you ever happen to bump into her on the street, perhaps Annie is the best way to go.
