Have you ever dressed yourself before and when it came to putting on your underwear you thought ‘what the hell is that little pocket in there for?’? Because I certainly have.
For years I assumed it served no purpose and was simply there for weird aesthetics, much like the bows on the front of some underwear. Bit actually, upon investigation I was wrong, so very wrong.
Although it seems rather pointless, that little pocket in the middle of your knickers serves an important role in protecting our health and hygiene.
First of all, what is it?
It may be often referred to as a ‘crotch pocket’ or even ‘that little pocket thingy’ but its actual title is a ‘gusset’. That’s because, although it bears a resemblance to the thing we put all of our random crap into, it isn’t actually a pocket. So don’t go storing any valuables in there.
What is the purpose of it?
As you probably know, the vagina is a very sensitive part of the body. For this reason, it often requires a little extra tlc when it comes to protecting it. For this exact reason, a gusset is sewn into most underwear in a breathable and gentle fabric, such as cotton.
The cotton then acts to keep your vagina dry and ventilated. Ventilation is important for the vagina because a lack of it can cause sweat and bacteria to build up, resulting in a yeast infection and other types of skin irritation.
Luckily for us, most underwear these days are designed with a gusset attached. So if you’re fond of some lace or silk thongs or undies, you don’t need to worry about your vagina’s well-being too much, as a cotton gusset will ensure that it has the correct ventilation it needs to breathe.
So the next time you’re out underwear shopping, make sure you buy one with the little pocket yolk – turns out it’s pretty important!
