Five-minute makeup means extra time in bed in the mornings, it's a win-win.

For the month of September, we’re looking at lots of back to school stories to help you feel as prepared as possible. Check out the rest of that series, here. Or you can search #KISSBTS on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

From Instagram to magazines, inspiration is everywhere. You probably have a few new makeup skills under your belt that you learned during lockdown too, so it’s the perfect time to show off your skills.

But, usually, your teachers probably won’t be happy if you come in with a full face on and there are usually some rules in the handbook about wearing lots. So it’s probably best to keep the peace and pare it back a bit while you’re in school. Plus, this means you have more time to sleep in the mornings!

It’s important to be comfortable to go out and about without makeup, it is your own face after all, but if you’re a beauty fanatic who loves all sorts of products, here are six  to give you that fresh-faced, glowy look, ideal for school days.

It’s SO important to wear a high factor SPF every day. Every. Single. Day. One of my own favourites is the Skingredients Skin Shield SPF 50. Normal SPFs can sometimes make your skin look greasy, paler, cause flashback, or just not work under makeup. But Skin Shield solves all those problems, while protecting your skin. It’s a bit pricier than some other SPFs out there, but the 50ml travel size will easily last at least six months, so it’s well worth the investment if you have any spare €s! Boots brand Your Good Skin has an SPF 30 for less than a fiver, and Olay and Botanics also have great day creams/moisturisers for under a tenner. So whatever your budget just pack on the SPF.

BB Cream/ Foundation

This is pretty much just a personal preference – if you’d like something that’s sheer coverage, to use as a light base, go for a BB cream. The Note Cosmetics BB Cream is a gorgeous one, it balances your skin tone and provides natural coverage, all while moisturising and illuminating your skin. Teen skin brand Jeju has also just released a no-makeup foundation for only €6.50, which is essentially a tinted cream for your face that smoothes and evens your skin, packed with great ingredients so it doesn’t irritate your skin. If you’d prefer to go for a foundation, try something like the Dream Urban Cover from Maybelline. It has medium to full coverage with a lightweight, barely-there feel combined with SPF 50. Ideal.

Dab of Concealer

If your skin is breaking out (thanks, face masks), add a little more coverage with concealer by dabbing it on and around your breakouts. Make sure to bring the concealer out away from the blemish, so that it can blend easily into the skin. A concealer with a doe-foot applicator always helps when you’re rushing in the mornings, like the L’Oreal True Match concealer.

Bronze and Blush

If you feel pale and tired in the mornings, these are handy just to add a touch of colour. Take a swirl of bronzer and work it around the edges of your face, in a ‘3’ like shape around your forehead, cheeks and jawline. Then, take a pop of blush and add some to the apples of your cheeks. Remember it’s a lot easier to add more blush and bronzer than it is to take it away, so be sure to use a light hand. Fancy picking up a new blush/bronze duo? We love the Sculpted by Aimee Gold Edition palette, plus you get a gorgeous highlighter in there too.

Brow Mascara

I don’t know about you, but when I’m doing simple, everyday makeup, sometimes filling in my brows take the longest. Cue, the Catrice Brow Colorist Semi-Permanent Brow Mascara. This brow gel mascara has a tint effect which means regular use will gradually intensify the natural colour of the eyebrow hairs, it’s like some kind of magic formula. All you have to do is simply brush the wand over your brows for an instantly fuller and thicker look. For around €4, it definitely deserves a spot in your Penneys basket.

And Finally, Actual Mascara

Sure where would we be without a lash of mascara (pun intended) to finish off a makeup look? If your school is strict, you really don’t need it, but if you feel like looking a little more alive on a Friday, mascara is a nice option to add dimension to your look. One mascara that won’t do you any wrong is the Maybelline Falsies Lash Lift. It ticks each and every box, volumising, lengthening, curling, thickening. Each and every one. And the best part? It comes in around the €12 mark. Worth every penny.
