Times seem good for Katy Perry right now, as she recently gushed about her engagement to Orlando Bloom and broke the news that they’re expecting a baby. But now, Katy has revealed that this wasn’t always the case.

In an interview with SiriusXM’s CBC Radio One, Katy opened up about how her mental health was affected when she and current partner Orlando Bloom broke up back in 2017. She said that at the time, she was upset over the split and her career also wasn’t doing so well.

“My career was on this trajectory when it was going up, up, and up, and then I had the smallest shift, not that huge from an outside perspective. But for me it was seismic,” she said on the radio show.

When her 2017 album Witnessdidn’t perform as well as she hoped it would, Katy says it “literally broke me in half.” She then opened up more about how the temporary split with Orlando affected her, “I had broken up with my boyfriend, who is now my baby daddy-to-be and then I was excited about flying high off the next record,” she explained. “But the validation did not make me high, and so I just crashed.”

She then continued to say that it was practicing gratitude that helped her, “If I did not find that I would have wallowed in my own sadness and probably just jumped,” she revealed. “But I found the ways to be grateful. If it gets really, really hard I walk around and say, ‘I am grateful, I am grateful!’ even though I am in a sh*tty mood.”

“It was so important for me to be broken so that I could find my wholeness in a whole different way,” she said.
