KISS Readers Share What They’re Doing To Keep Busy While Social Distancing

Social distancing is SO important right now, but you don't have to be bored.

It’s been a whirlwind week for Ireland, as so much has changed in such a short space of time. Schools are now closed, you’re working from home and you’re practicing social distancing to save lives.

While it can be a tricky time, and you may find it stuff to be isolated from so much, it is SO important to take social distancing seriously.

This means staying at home, not hanging out with your friends in person, being really careful when you are out and about (for walks or shopping) not to go to near to anyone else.

And while it’s frustrating, and even a little scary, we are in a very lucky position. We have access to the internet, we are able to keep in close contact with friends, and there is loads to do to keep busy.

We asked our readers over on Instagram to share their tips on keeping busy while social distancing and helping to keep everyone safe, so that we can get back to normal life quicker.

“Going for walks”

Several people revealed that they were keeping busy by going for a stroll before classes in the morning, at lunch time or after classes. This is a really good idea to get fresh air and keep active. If you’re going for walks, it’s important to remember to stay 2 metres apart from anyone – be it a friend you’re walking with or a stranger on the street. Even if this means crossing the road or waiting for someone to pass. Keep hand sanitizer with you if you have it.

“Keeping active as much as I can”

If you’re looking to stay active at home, thankfully there are millions of fitness videos online and definitely something to suit everyone, no matter what type of workout you like. Some readers said they’re doing yoga every morning, while others said they’re trying HIIT or dance workouts. Joe Wicks is doing PE classes twice a week, and you can check out a list of other home workouts we’d recommend here.

“Facetiming pals”

It’s so important to keep in touch with family members and friends who you don’t get to see in person at the moment. Video chat is a great way to keep in touch and feel a little closer to them. If someone doesn’t have video calls, you should still ring them up, sometimes even hearing your grandparents’ voices might help to put you at ease. The most important thing is to keep open communication with the people in your house and people you can’t see, so spirits stay high!

“Catching up on all my favourite shows”

Was there ever a better excuse to catch up on shows you love, or ones you’ve been meaning to watch for months? Now is the time, set up a video party with your friend so you can all watch together in a way that feels like you’re having a big sleepover!

“Having lots of playtime with my dog”

If you’re lucky enough to have a pet while stuck at home, make the most of it by getting lots of cuddles and running around the garden with your furry friend!

“Reading loads of books”

Whether you’re a bookworm, who’s always got a novel on the go, or you’ve always been meaning to get into reading more, now is the time to sink your teeth in. Check out our tips for reading more, and recommended books, here. You can order from lots of bookshops online and get them to your door, so try to support your local bookshop if you can.

“Not just tidying but CLEANING my room”

Lots of you said you were tidying and cleaning up around the house. If you can help your parents keep the place looking great, you’ll make life much easier. It means you have more space to move around and more headspace. If you’re looking to tidy or sort your room, check out our Room Revamp series, which comes out every Friday.

“Listening to more podcasts”

Lots of you are loving podcasts, from ones that discuss your favourite show like Brooklyn 99 or The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to true crime too. If you’re looking for something light and fun, check out our list of 8 Positive Podcasts To Listen To When You Need A Pick-Me-Up.

“Trying to learn new makeup skills, because I have LOADS of makeup and loads of time!”

If you’ve always dreamed of getting the perfect flick of eyeliner, or wanted to try something more elaborate like floral liner, there’s never been a better time to experiment.
