Some people just aren’t a fan of makeup primers, while others just can’t and won’t be without them. I tend to fall into the latter, I LOVE a primer. But many people still aren’t convinced of their purpose. What does a primer do? Do you really need one? Is it just another step in your routine? Well, now more than ever, with the need to wear face masks while out and about, a primer is essential.

Essentially, a primer prepares your skin for makeup, and addresses some skin concerns that you might have that would make your foundation look less than gorge – like oiliness, dryness, dullness. Plus, they often help with the staying power of your foundation – see? Essential for when wearing masks.

Ideally, you apply your primer of choice after your moisturiser and SPF, before you go in with your foundation. So now that we have the essentials out of the way, here are some of our all-time favourite primers. From €5 right up to €30, take your pick!

Urban Decay All Nighter Face Primer

If you’ve ever tried Urban Decay’s All Night Setting Spray, then you already know the matching primer isn’t here to play. The sheer, lightweight texture smoothes your skin, with a little boost of hydration for good measure. This primer, in particular, is all about the staying power, and an airbrush finish. Shop it here.

The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer

This primer is ideal if you tend to have combination or oily skin. It has a pore blurring effect, kills oil and shine, and helps keep your makeup in place all day long. It feels super silky when being applied, but doesn’t leave your face feeling silky, or slippery even, mind you. The best part? You can pick it up for around €5. Ideal! Check it out right here.

Benefit POREfessional

Here it is, the Kween of mattifying primers. Benefit’s POREfessional primer is known for being one of the absolute best there is, it evenly smooths out pores, zaps away any excess oil or shine, and creates the perfect base for your makeup to last all day. Plus, they now also have a hydrating version and the pearl formulation, which leaves your skin slightly illuminated. Check it out right here, and if you’re not fully convinced, then you can pick up a mini to try out first.

Catrice Ten!Sational 10 in 1 Dream Primer

If you’re looking for a great multi-purpose product that will help look after your skin and give it a nice radiant glow, you’re gonna just love this primer. Not only will it protect your skin from UV rays with SPF (although you might want to pair it with a higher SPF too) but it also has anti-pollution and antioxidant effects, gives your skin a boost of hydration and minimises any pores. Ideal for wearing alone or under foundation.

KVD Vegan Beauty Eye Primer

Now, this one is a little different – where it focuses on your eye makeup alone. KVD Vegan Beauty know a thing or two when it comes to eye makeup (their Tattoo liner is like no other), so it’s no surprise that their eye primer is a thing of beauty. The brand new Shake Primer which is launching at Boots in August is an innovative invisible, liquid vegan eyeshadow primer for all skin tones which leaves no cast or colour behind. This unique bi-phase elixir is specially formulated to prevent eye makeup from creasing and fading for the ultimate wear of any powder eyeshadow. Just use one drop for both your eyes and be on your way!
