How can I clear acne on my back/arms/chest?

Jennifer says: “Body acne in all its forms is so normal – you’ve probably already heard of the terms “backne” and “chestne”. To get nerdie, spots occur when sebum and dead skin cells combine to form a plug in our follicle (read: pore). During puberty and the menstrual cycle, we experience a fluctuation in hormones which influences how much sebum is secreted from the sebaceous glands found in hair follicles. That’s why it’s common for teens to experience acne and have oily skin.

To combat body acne, I recommend a product like the Murad Clarifying Body Spray. It contains salicylic acid, an exfoliating acid, to dissolve sebum and dead skin cells in the hair follicle, alongside allantoin to soothe the skin and reduce redness. Importantly, salicylic acid can make the skin more susceptible to sun damage so make sure you apply your daily SPF.”


 How do I deal with flaky/dry skin on my face? What should I be using?

Jennifer says: “Do you have acne and flaky skin? If that’s the case, it sounds like your skin might be dehydrated. Dehydrated and dry skin are two very different things – dry skin is a skin type, whereas dehydration is a skin condition. Dehydrated skin lacks moisture, while dry skin experiences a sebum, aka oil, deficiency. I would recommend a lightweight hydrating serum to flood the skin with moisture without clogging pores. The Pestle & Mortar Hyaluronic Acid Serum contains hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and glycerinfor maximum hydration.

How do I know if what I have is acne or just spots?

“The skin is an organ and should be treated as one. Therefore, I would always advise that you speak to your GP about your skin if you think you might have acne. A few pimples that crop up around your period are completely normal, but it’s worth seeking guidance from your GP if you’re experiencing more regular breakouts that are bothering you. Acne an incredibly common skin condition that affects 1 in 10 people – so never feel like you’re alone with your skin concerns.”

Is the food I’m eating related to acne?

Jennifer says: “Many studies have attempted to tie a diet of fatty foods, dairy products and chocolate to an increase in acne, but direct correlations are yet to be found. Now, that’s not an invitation to scoff all the pizza, chips and ice cream in the world – it’s all about balance and eating different foods in moderation. I take an inside, outside and on top approach to skincare which is why I like to feed my skin from within through a healthy diet and supplements.”

How do I know what skincare to use for my acne without
spending loads of money on the wrong things?

Jenn says: “Less is more definitely rings true if you suffer from acne. You might be trying to do your skin a solid by applying layers of skincare products, but this can lead to irritation, sensitisation or an increase in comedones, aka spots. Keep it simple with a salicylic acid cleanser to regulate sebum production and slough off dead skin cells – it’ll help to prevent further breakouts. Skingredients Sally Cleanse, which contains salicylic acid, is great because it can be used as your active cleanse (every 3rd night), a micro-mask (apply to skin for 2-minutes) and a spot-zapper (apply to the spot for 3-minutes).
