Your Guide To Dressing For A Disco

We can just see the insta pics now

It’s no secret that discos are fun. It’s a great time to just get together with all your friends and have the best craic. You spend the whole night singing your heart out and dancing until your feet are killing you.

Just as fun, if not more, than the actual disco is the getting ready process – but first comes the stress of deciding what to actually wear.

Picking out an outfit for a disco can be one of the hardest decisions you have to make as a teenager. So much has to be factored into the thought process – What are your friends wearing? Will you all have a similar vibe? who’s house are you getting ready in? Do you think you’ll be able to rob that dress that your friend owns? The list is endless.

Usually, it’s the outfit that causes the most amount of struggle. It’s what everyone is going to be looking at and of course, you’ll need something cute for Insta pics! But if you’re panicking over having nothing to wear (we’ve all been there) don’t worry because we’ve whipped together a simple guide on what to wear if you’re searching for some inspo.

Starting simple

This is probably the safest option when it comes to picking an outfit for a disco. It never fails to look good and you usually always feel good in it too, if you haven’t guessed what it is yet, it’s an LBD. Yes, a little black dress. How One Direction of us.

You can get whatever silhouette you feel most comfortable in, but always keep in mind that you’ll be super warm once you’re actually at the disco. Another thing that is perfect about an LBD is that you can play around with colours in your shoes, your accessories or your makeup to add a little *spice* to the look.

The queen of the LBD herself, Lauren Whelan absolutely killing this black Oh Polly dress and Calvin Klein blazer combo, if you’re looking for some inspo on styling.

Colourful co-ord

You barely have to put in any effort with a co-ord and you have a full outfit – the dream.

You can still keep it simple and go for a block colour co-ord if you wanted. It could be bright green or maybe lilac, whatever colour you feel suits you best. And if you were feeling a little extra and really wanted to go for it, maybe try out an eyeshadow or eyeliner look in a colour that matches your look.

Your co-ord could be a matching crop top and skirt combo, a shirt and flared trousers or even a dress and mini cardigan look. There’s tonnes of co-ords on the high street at the minute so it’s all about finding what works best for you.

Bold patterns

Prints are so on-trend right now, and if they’re something you’re into, going shopping for an outfit is going to be pretty easy.

There is no doubt you will be turning heads with a funky printed outfit. First, you’ll need to figure out which pattern is best for you. So whittling down the shape, colour scheme, and size of the patterns is a good place to start.

There are tonnes of different types of patterns out there, from floral to animal print. We recommend going for whichever catches your eye most, find a print that screams ‘you’ the most and stick with it. If you’re feeling really bold, you could even clash two patterns, think a leopard print crop on top and some zebra flares on the bottom!

It’s not just about the clothes

Yes, what clothes you wear matter when you want to look good but a killer outfit is never complete without the extra bits you add on. An outfit can fall apart in seconds with the wrong pair of shoes and you might need a fab pair of earrings to pull everything together. This is always good to consider in your choice process.

Starting with shoes, just remember you’re there to have fun, so think comfortable. The highest stilettos you’ve seen in your life will probably alter your ability to have fun so we recommend opting out of that. Instead, if you’re keen on a heel go block and chunky, this will save your feet some pain. But, if you’re not a heel kind of gal, some platform docs, converse, or cute pumps will work perfectly and ensure you can spend the night dancing away.

Accessories are key to pulling an outfit together. Pick a vibe and stick to it, whether it’s strictly gold chunky jewellery or if you’re looking for an eclectic mix of gold and silver work with that. Sometimes when it comes to jewellery more is more. If you want to stack as many bracelets as you can fit on your wrist, go for it. Or if you want to wear giant earrings, no one is stopping you.

There’s no right or wrong with dressing yourself, what you wear has little relevance to who you are as a person and it’s important to remind ourselves of that sometimes. With this guide, we simply want to help steer you in the right direction if you’re fashion is something you’re into, if it’s not – throw on some jeans and a tee! You do you boo.

If you need tips on actually going to the disco, look no further!
